Why I Love Documenting the Everyday, In-Between Moments
Not every session needs a special occasion. Some of my favourite work lately hasn't come from weddings or big milestone shoots at all β it's come from a casual morning in someone's backyard, pancakes at home, or an afternoon at the lake. Just life, happening exactly as it normally does.
The best memories usually aren't the planned ones
Think about it: the wet towels tossed in the boat. The snacks that somehow disappear in five minutes flat. Wind-blown hair. Little hands reaching for juice boxes. The kind of laughter that echoes across the lake. None of that was staged, and none of it was supposed to be the "main event", but it's exactly the kind of thing your kids will actually remember.
That's the whole idea behind these sessions. Your family doesn't need a special occasion, a coordinated outfit, or a big production to tell your story. Sometimes the most meaningful photos come from simply doing what you already love together.
What this actually looks like
This isn't just a philosophy, it's genuinely become a huge part of my work lately. A few recent favourites:
Rachel invited me into a totally normal day β playing in the backyard, hanging out in the living room, making a glorious mess in the kitchen. Just the everyday rhythms of motherhood, exactly as they happen.
We turned Cristinaβs family ritual of a chaotic waffle breakfast into total magic. Also, talk about childhood goals growing up on this farm?!
The Holmes family brought me along for their favourite thing in the world: a day out on the boat. I was even trailing behind them from a tube at one point, camera in hand ;)
And for Baby Fraser's session, we hung out in their dream house that's still mid-construction and shared pizza together, sitting right on the floor.
None of these needed a perfect field at golden hour β though you know I love that too. Sometimes the beauty is in your everyday moments, the ones you'll find yourself missing the most.
This is your sign to romanticize the ordinary
I know it's tempting to think photos are only "worth it" for the big milestones β the wedding, the newborn bubble, the once-a-year family portrait. But some of the moments I'm proudest of documenting are the small, quiet, completely ordinary ones. A Tuesday afternoon that somehow turns into the most beautiful set of photos you've ever seen. That's the real stuff; that's what I'm actually after.
So whether it's a lake day, a backyard afternoon, or just your family's regular Sunday morning breakfast β let's turn your everyday moments into the memories you'll hold onto forever. That's a story worth telling too!
